April is sexual assault awareness month

Please read this article by Trisha Schafer, GFWC Signature Program Chairman:

The theme of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) 2023 is “Drawing Connections: Prevention Demands Equity.” April’s campaign calls on all individuals, communities, organizations, and institutions to change ourselves and the systems surrounding us to build racial equity and respect. Even before its official declaration, SAAM was about awareness and prevention of sexual assault, harassment, and abuse. Looking at the history of the movement to end sexual violence, it is clear why: It is impossible to prevent an issue no one knows about, and it’s difficult to make people aware of a problem without providing a solution. Awareness and prevention work in tandem, and they always have. From the civil rights movement to the founding of the first rape crisis centers to national legislation and beyond, the roots of SAAM run deep. Find out more on SAAM history at: GFWC’s Signature Program Committee offers you some ideas on how you can raise awareness about sexual assault in April and all year long. * Wear TEAL on April 4 – Create social media posts to promote others to do the same * Use your Club, District, State, or Region social media to post facts about sexual assault throughout the month * April 22 for Earth Day – Distribute seed packets or balls with this message: “Join Us in sowing the seeds of change and let healing take root.” Partner with your community Sexual Violence Agency. * April 26th is Denim Day – Protest against the misconceptions about sexual violence.
